First 3 Days: Decompression
While some dogs adjust right away, most dogs need some time to decompress. Remember they do not know you or where they are, so it’s perfectly normal to expect them them to need time and patience.
Keep routines calm and predictable, and avoid introducing too many new people or places.
Your dog may feel overwhelmed, scared, or anxious.
They may hide, sleep a lot, have little appetite, or be hesitant to interact.
They may have accidents even if they are house trained as they adjust.
First 3 Weeks: Learning the Routine
After 3 weeks, most dogs start to feel a bit more settled in their new home. If your dog doesn’t fit into this routine after this time period, please continue to be patient. Some dogs just need more time than others.
This is a good time to begin gentle training and establish consistent rules and boundaries.
Your dog begins to understand their new environment.
They start recognizing feeding times, walks, and household expectations.
First 3 Months: Feeling at Home
After 3 months, most dogs feel like they are truly home. If your dog still hasn’t adjusted and you haven’t consulted with a trainer, now might be a good time to consider one to help both you and your dog.
Trust deepens, training progresses, and they become more comfortable as a member of the family.
Your dog is more likely to feel safe and secure.
Their true personality often starts to emerge.
